Below are the garden styles you can choose from (all can be adapted for any size garden, from small backyard to large country garden):
WOODLAND GARDEN
Victorian inventor and industrialist William Armstrong created two amazing gardens, one at his city home in Jesmond, Newcastle Upon Tyne, that has a tributary of the Tyne flowing through the ravine, the other was on the barren hillsides, surrounding his country home in Northumberland. He donated his woodland 'back garden' to the city, and it has been a much loved park ever since. His barren moorland hillsides at his country home, that he planted, are now unrecognisable, full of mature trees and plants. At the time he was making the gardens, conifers, such as Western Red Cedars from places like the USA were being imported for the first time and were used. These now are becoming very large mature trees.
Despite these gardens being on very large scales, the style can be replicated for even small gardens. The type of plants used for this type of garden include plants such as Azaleas, Rhododendrons, heathers, conifers (dwarf if necessary), heathers, alpine plants etc. Rocks and moving water are also features of this type of garden.
JAPANESE GARDEN
Renowned for their beauty and tranquility, a garden with a Japanese feel, can be achieved by using plants such as bamboos, certain types of pines, acer trees, cherry blossom trees, azaleas, etc. As well as using oriental ornaments, lighting & planters, and water features or a pond.
MEDITERRANEAN GARDEN
There are plenty of Mediterranean plants that can do well in our cooler climate, and survive British winters. They do especially well in warmer, sunnier south facing gardens. Plants used to create a Mediterranean garden include plants such as Mediterrean herbs, such as Lavender and Rosemary, Olive trees, certain pines, flowering shrubs, cold hardy palms etc. Terracotta planters, urns, ornaments and trickling classical water features can help create a garden that will remind you of happy summer days in countries such as Spain, Greece and Italy.
So many gardens are what you might call underplanted. Adding more plants and letting them mature, can completely transform so many gardens.
