A bonsai tree is not a special dwarf type of tree, it is simply, just a tree that has its growth restricted by being grown in a pot. Most people are familiar with indoor bonsai trees, but many people don't know that its quite possible to grow an outdoor bonsai tree, and if you use a large planter, it will grow larger than an indoor bonsai in a small pot, but will have its growth restricted so it still remains much smaller than if it had been planted in the ground.
For example, if an Oak tree is planted in a 1 metre x 1 metre planter it will mature but remain about 2 metres tall, compared to over 10 metres if it was planted in the ground. With good care, and watering, outdoor bonsais can last decades, even centuries. They are a great way to add some greenery to a paved area, such as a drive or courtyard.
